+ BUSINESS AND COMPUTERS +

 

 

ADVANCED OFFICE 2007:  A fast moving six week program where the student will apply their skills using Word and Excel 2007 software.  Prior knowledge of Word and Excel is desired.  Mondays  (7:30-9:30 pm).  Six weeks.  Begins Feb. 1 at ECMD. Instructor, Lisa Bender.  Cost $90. 

 

BASIC AUTOCAD:  Trains computer user with computer aided drafting/design application, using AutoCAD 2008.  Wednesdays (6:30-9pm).  Seven weeks.  Begins Jan. 27 at ECMD.  Instructor, Alan VanBemmel.  Cost $145.

 

INTRODUCTION TO EBAY:  A four evening session on buying and selling over the Internet on Ebay.  Learn to take, edit and post digital pictures as well as buying and selling items on Ebay.  Search for that long lost item cherished in your memory or plan to sell something for someone else to cherish.  If you are already registered as a seller, please bring your user name, password, address, item to sell and camera with USB. Tuesdays (7-9 pm).  Begins Jan. 26 at BHS.  Instructors, Patty Kratochvil & Chuck Fedt. Cost $60.

 

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING: Create your own programs of varying complexity using Turbo C++. The class will focus on basic concepts and simple programs that explain these concepts. Thursdays (7-9 pm). Eight weeks. Begins Jan. 28 at ECMD. Instructor, Jerry Cooley. Cost $100.

 

INDIVIDUALIZED COMPUTER TRAINING:  An efficient and effective way to receive computer training.  Have an instructor sit with you at your own computer or at a computer in one of our labs.  You may want to begin instruction on a computer, but have missed a scheduled class or you may already be using a computer and have specific training requirements and do not need to go through a whole class.  Individualized training can meet both these needs.  A minimum of one hour is required. $60 per hour for one person and $5 per hour for each additional person.  If you wish to rent a computer for individual or company training, consider the ECMD lab at the rate of $5 per hour.

 

+ SPECIAL INTERESTS +

 

CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE TRAINING:  Six sessions designed to assist you with becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.  This is a great opportunity to participate in SD Board of Nursing approved classroom training.  Successful completion of this course makes the student eligible for the written on-line testing which is required for certification.  This certification is required for long term care employment.  Wednesdays (6-10 pm).  Begins Jan 27at ECMD.  Instructor, Vicki Creswell, RN BSN.  Cost $350 includes workbook and materials but does not include testing fee.

GERMAN: An exciting introduction to German conversation and culture.  Perfect for business and pleasure travel to German speaking countries. Fee includes handouts and ethnic foods that may make occasional appearances. Tuesdays (7-9 pm). Nine weeks. Begins Jan. 26 at BHS. Instructor, Marsha Klein. Cost $130.

 

BASIC WELDING: Basic training in arc, oxy-acetylene and wire feed welding. Fee includes supplies and use of safety equipment. Thursdays, (6:30-9:30 pm). 5 weeks. Begins Jan 28 at BHS. Instructor, Michelle Nelson.  Cost $145.

 

GARDENING 101: Designed for the new or beginning gardener on the exciting topic of creating, maintaining and caring for the home garden and landscape. Taught by Brookings Master Gardeners and Interns, with local guest experts! Tuesdays (6-8 PM). 8 weeks. Begins Jan. 26 at ECMD. Cost $40 NEW!!

 

HOME LANDSCAPING: A great opportunity to begin preparing for spring by discussing landscape designs, trends and materials. Begin selecting plants, consider locations, proper care and installation techniques. Tuesdays, (7-9 pm). Six weeks. Begins Jan. 26 at Austreim Landscaping. Instructor, Doug Austreim. Cost $85.

 

LIFE COACHING: Learning how to use relational influence to develop and empower others. Foundational coaching skills provide a fresh approach to communication, leadership development, support systems for change and living more purposefully. Ideal for those who are relationship focused and want to maximize potential at work, in organizations and with family and friends. Tuesdays, (7-9 pm). Four weeks. Begins Jan. 26 at ECMD. Presenter, Julie Ross. Cost $55.

 

 

+ HEALTH AND RECREATION +

 

WEDDING DANCE 101:  A fun and healthy way to learn the basic steps of 2 step and jitterbug.  Enjoy this exciting experience of developing “life time” recreational and relaxation skills.  Leather soled shoes are preferred.  Mondays (7-8:30 pm). 6 weeks. Begins Jan. 25 at Medary Multi Purpose Room.  Instructors, the Triple B’s.  Cost $70 per couple.

 

LAUGHTER YOGA:  Laughter Yoga is sweeping the globe as a fun approach to stress management and physical fitness.  A combination of simple laughter exercises with gentle yoga breathing techniques.  Be prepared to participate in a fun and transformational experience that is on the cutting edge of reducing stress and creating joy in your life.  Saturday (1-2:30 or 3-4:30 pm) Jan 30 at ECMD.  Presenters, Dan Johnson and Jason Freeman. Cost $20.

 

AQUA AEROBICS: A fun and healthy way to do water exercise. Use aerobics and toning to improve cardiovascular and fitness. No experience required.  Mondays (6-7pm). Nine weeks. Begins Feb. 1 at BHS. Instructor, Lisa Bender. Cost $45. 

 

TENSION BUSTERS:  Are your shoulder and neck muscles tied up in knots?  Is your low back tired and achy?  Does your mind have difficulty winding down at the end of the day?  Join us as we learn how to bust through the tension and calm the body with breathing and muscle relaxation techniques.  This is one class where it's ok to fall asleep.  :) Thursday,  March 4 (3-5 pm) at ECMD. Instructor, Tonya Schoenfelder. Cost $20.

 

HEY, WAKE UP!:  Do you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep?  Are you best friends with the snooze button?  Sleeplessness is a serious disorder that interferes with the body’s ability to get the rest it needs to re-energize physically, mentally and emotionally.  If you would like to wake up refreshed and ready for the day, then join us for this informative session!  Learn how to create the ideal sleep environment and improve your sleep habits through natural, wellness techniques. SING ALONG GUITAR: Once again, calling all campsite, fireside, moonlight, stagefright wannabe pickers. Bring your own guitar and develop basic guitar playing skills and repertoire including techniques, chording patterns, instrument set-up, and lots of songs. Mondays (7-8:30 pm). Six weeks. Begins Feb 1 at ECMD. Instructor, Jeff Buettner. Cost $60.

 

BOB ROSS PAINTING: Experience the joy of painting with "wet on wet" technique.  Even if you have never painted, you should find this workshop valuable.  Students will paint “Wintertime”.  Rugged snow-capped mountains sit high against the deep blue sky, overlooking a beautiful snow covered valley with snowy pine trees and a log cabin nestled in the trees. Sat. (9 am-3 pm). April 24 at ECMD. Instructor, Sharon Rodeman, Bob Ross Certified. $70 if student furnishes own supplies or $92 if instructor furnishes supplies and loans brushes.

 

KNITTING:  An enjoyable way to learn the basics of knittingFour hour-and-one-half sessions taught by a master’s level knitter.  Thursdays (6:00-7:30 pm). Begins Jan. 28 at ECMD. Instructor, Susan Brugger. Cost $20 if student furnishes own supplies or $25 if instructor furnishes.

 

ADVANCED BEGINNER KNITTING: For knitters who know the basics. Will learn decreases and increases and simple pattern stitch variations. Wednesdays (6:00 - 7:30 pm). Begins Jan. 27 at ECMD. Instructor, Susan Brugger. Cost $20 if student furnishes own supplies. Please contact for suggested supplies.

 

BASIC WOODWORKING – MICKELSON MIDDLE SCHOOL: Students will learn proper use of woodworking tools and have the opportunity to construct a woodworking project of their choice.  Ideal for the beginner or the advanced woodworker. Mondays (6:30-8:30 pm). Eight weeks. Begins Feb. 22 at MMMS. Instructor, Steve Thiesse. Cost of $100 does not include project materials.

 

WOODCARVING:  Extremely talented instructor will provide an introduction to basic wood carving techniques.  You will complete a variety of projects.  Knife and project blanks will be included, with additional blanks being available at nominal costs.  Tuesdays (7-9 pm).  Seven weeks.  Begins Feb 9 at ECMD.  Instructor, Jim Booher.  Cost $115.

HELPING CHILDREN BECOME THEMSELVES:  Giving the Love that Empowers. Designed for parents (regardless of your children’s ages), relatives and educators to assist with helping children grow, to love and nurture the best in them. This interactive PRH workshop will explore deep wishes regarding your children and will identify ways to foster the unique growth and gifts of each. Tuesdays (7-10 pm).  Ten weeks.  Begins Jan. 26 at ECMD.  Instructor, Linda Lambertz.  Cost $190 includes materials.

 

THE POWER OF FEELINGS: Exploring My Feelings. Understanding my strengths and positive potential. Understanding our emotions and learning to manage our feelings helps us to take charge of our lives. We can’t help what we feel, but we can better control the way we handle our feelings. Find balance and personal awareness, and learn to access your feelings with more positive results. 3 Thursdays (7-10pm) Begins Feb. 18 at ECMD. Instructor, Linda Lambertz. Cost $75.

 

JOURNALING: THE DOORWAY TO SELF AWARENESS: Get to know the REAL YOU…go inside and you will be pleasantly surprised! Experience a method of reflective writing that can accelerate your personal growth. You will begin a Growth Journal. You will learn to awaken the desire to discover who you are in your capabilities, dreams, and hopes for your life. Bring a journal for your writing. 3 Thursdays (7-9pm) Begins March 11 at ECMD. Instructor, Linda Lambertz. Cost $45.

 

WRITERS’ SEMINAR & WORKSHOP:  This one-day seminar is for anyone interested in writing books of fiction or nonfiction, magazine articles, short stories, children’s books, poetry, scripts, religious essays, personal experiences and other works.  Topics include selecting a manuscript idea, sharpening your writing skills, income potential, finding the right publisher, literary agents, writing a query letter, the author’s contract and copyrighting your material.  Presenter, Jean Tennant has published several novels, as well as more than 200 short stories and newspaper articles. Thurs. (9 am-4 pm). April 22 at ECMD.  Cost $49.

 

MONEY MATTERS:  Four 1.5-hour sessions designed for people interested in gaining control of their personal finances.  Budgeting basics, credit basics, digging out of debt, and saving for the future are discussed.  At the end of the four weeks, participants have the option of scheduling free and confidential one-on-one time to discuss personal financial issues with the instructor.  Wednesdays (7-8:30 pm).  Begins Jan. 27 at ECMD.  Instructor, Donna Bittiker, SDSU Extension Educator.  Cost $20.

HAVE YOU SAVED A LIFE TODAY?:  Become a Red Cross Instructor to help others learn to save lives.  Instructors can teach a variety of courses to include First Aid, CPR, HIV/Aids prevention, and more! The Red Cross is looking for smart, motivated people who truly want to make a difference within our Community. Three day commitment: Friday Feb 5 6p - 9:30p, Saturday Feb 6 8am - 5pm and Sunday Feb 7 8am - 1pm.  Cost: $150.00 with grant scholarships available to qualified individuals. Instructor: Kris Struwe, American Red Cross Instructor Trainer.  Call 695-2270. 

 

ADULT CPR/AMERICAN RED CROSS:  A 4 hour class designed to train individuals to recognize and provide basic care for adult breathing and cardiac emergencies.  Tuesday (6-9:30 pm). Feb. 9 at ECMD.  Instructor, American Red Cross certified.  Cost $30.

 

INFANT/CHILD CPR/AMERICAN RED CROSS:  A 4 ½ hour class designed to train individuals to recognize and provide basic care for infant/child breathing and cardiac emergencies.  Tuesday (5:30-9:30 pm). Feb. 23 at ECMD.  Instructor, American Red Cross certified.  Cost $35.

 

FIRST AID BASICS/AMERICAN RED CROSS:  A 4 hour class designed to train individuals to become familiar with recognizing and caring for victims of sudden illness and injury.  Tuesday (6-9:30 pm). March 9 at ECMD.  Instructor, American Red Cross certified.  Cost $30.

 

HOME BUYER EXPRESS:  A very helpful two-part class designed to help individuals with the home buying process.  Ideal for anyone wanting to become more familiar with the home buying process, determining affordability, obtaining a mortgage, or the costs of home ownership.  Wednesdays (6-9 pm). Feb. 17 & 24 or  April 14 & 21at ECMD.  Instructor, Saila Gandhi-Erion, Certified Credit/Housing Counselor.  NO FEE – Funded by Homeownership Education Resource Organization. 

 

PEOPLES LAW:  Receive instruction from some of the community’s outstanding lawyers.  Topics will include Law & Family Relationships, Debtor/Creditor Laws, Criminal Law, Wills & Estate Planning and Real Estate. Mondays (7-9 pm). Five weeks. Begins Feb 1 at ECMD. Instructors: Brookings County Bar Association members. Cost $15 promotional fee.
